However, if you really want to get down to the bottom of OCD, you need to realize that it's not a disorder but a set of habits. You may ask how this can be as it feels horrible enough to call a disorder for sure. This is how I know it's a set of habits, because when you change the way you look at things, the things you are looking at will change. It's a set of habits because once you change the way that you react to these thoughts, the thoughts start to not bother you anymore and they start to fade away. I'm speaking from experience.
I've learned through working with hundreds of people personally that there are common characteristics in OCD sufferers. Here are some of those fundamentals and some techniques to deal with them. When people with OCD have an obsessive thought that scares them, they will do anything they can to stop the anxiety. The fact of the matter is that the action or ritual that they do is not what makes them feel better, but instead, it is their brain telling them that it is ok to feel better now that they have done this ritual. They feel better because they believe that the ritual that they did actually makes it better, but in reality this is like the placebo effect because it is not the ritual that made them feel better, but in reality is was simply the belief that the ritual would make them feel better that actually made them feel better. If you react out of fear then you will have a problem, however if you have confidence and see that these thoughts are just thoughts then you will not be afraid and will not have OCD.
People with OCD are lucky because everywhere they go there are examples of how not to react with OCD behavior. Most of the time you can find that if you ask that question, you will know what to do when you are faced with an OCD thought. Another great technique that you can use to stop your OCD is to defy your OCD compulsions by doing the exact opposite of what you feel like you have to do. For example if you feel like you have to wash your hands, you can touch the dirt instead.
