Treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder should not be approached with a one size fits all mentality. Sadly there are too many doctors and practitioners that do this when it comes to their treatments. There should actually be some insight into what kinds of problems the person is experiencing. I feel that it should be a little more personal than just writing a prescription and send you off skipping to the pharmacist. I really believe and have seen from my own experience that people do much better when they work on the root cause of the problem which is their way of interpreting situations they face.
I really find that effective treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder requires the sufferer to really explore the bad habits that they are engaging in such as repeated counting, washing, checking, hoarding, etc. Then I would even take it a step further and help them figure out what the fears are that are driving these actions. There is always a fear at the root of any type of OCD. Once the fear is pinpointed, the sufferer can start to work on facing these fear systematically until they are no longer fear but strengths. You should know that by now, you can actually turn fears into strengths and I will show you how right now.
A long time ago when I was getting treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder I realized that it was simply not enough if I wanted to actually become OCD free. I remember when I had migraines and the doctor told me that I would have them for the rest of my life. I refused to accept that and I found out that all I needed was a little chiropractic help and the migraines were gone! I applied this same mindset to OCD. I knew there had to be someone out there who had OCD and then got rid of it and after a lot of hard work, I became of these people! Do you want to be one of these people?
I would not just stop the current treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder that you are engaging in right now, but I would incorporate this new information. I want you to make a schedule to face your fears. If you are afraid of touching a counter top, set times of the day that you will do this. Now you may be shaking your head saying, "Oh, CBT, ya, been there, done that." I need you to know that CBT alone does not work because your thought processes are still the same. No, instead you need to know what is going on and how to change your thought processes as you are doing this fear facing exercise.
Your current treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder may involve CBT or EFT or any of the others but you need to watch what you are saying to yourself as you are doing these things. If you face a fear but in your head say to yourself, "this is so stupid, I don't want to get germs, I can't wait until I don't have to do this anymore" you are not going to get any real progress. You need to instead change your thinking while you are doing these things into, "I am touching this counter top because I know that everyone has germs and that God made my body strong enough to protect me from germs, I am showing myself right now that touching the counter top is ok because it's normal and I am a normal person just like most other people."
